Overview

Purpose of study (KS4)

In Year 10 & 11, we offer the Pearson BTEC Level & Level 2 awards in Home Cooking Skills.

BTEC level 1 & 2 Qualification number (QN: 500/8084/2)

Credit value level 1: 4

Credit value level 2: 6

The purpose of the Pearson BTEC Level 1 and Level 2 awards in Home Cooking Skills is to give learners the opportunity to develop:

  • the knowledge, understanding and confidence to cook meals at home
  • an understanding on how to economise when planning a meal
  • an ability to transfer skills learned to different recipes
  • an ability to inspire others by transferring that knowledge

Studying this BTEC develops confidence in pupils to become more independent and self-sufficient when it comes to relationships with food and nutrition. It helps them to learn how to read food labels and gives them a better understanding of comparing ingredients to make healthier choices.

Cooking can help individuals to be more in control of their daily life, which can sometimes help towards improved mental health. Becoming conscious of what ingredients you are using and having the ability to be able to prepare a nutritious meal for yourself, family or friends, gives you control over your diet instead of becoming reliant on unhealthy foods.

Food is a big part of life. Cooking, being creative with food and presentation are good life skills that can help young people be more independent and create situations for them to socialise and take part in group activities, which are excellent skills to have in today’s fast world.

This qualification is a good opportunity for younger people to connect with the older generation in exchanging and sharing recipes and reviving the art of cooking which is getting lost in today's fast-paced world.
