Year 8 and Year 10 - Pi Day Activities

The year 8 and 10 pupils engaged in Pi day activities on 16th March 2021.

Pi Day is an annual celebration of the mathematical constant π (pi). Pi Day is observed on March 14 (3/14 in the month/day format) since 3, 1, and 4 are the first three significant digits of π. It was founded in 1988 by Larry Shaw, an employee of the Exploratorium.

Pi (often represented by the lower-case Greek letter π), one of the most well-known mathematical constants, is the ratio of a circle’s circumference to its diameter. For any circle, the distance around the edge is a little more than three times the distance across.

Typing π into a calculator and pressing ENTER will yield the result 3.141592654, not because this value is exact, but because a calculator’s display is often limited to 10 digits. Pi is actually an irrational number (a decimal with no end and no repeating pattern) that is most often approximated with the decimal 3.14 or the fraction 22/7.

Year 8

The year 8 pupils created a skyline artwork using the first 20- 25 digits of Pi. They used graph paper to represent the digits of pi as number of storeys in buildings.

Year 10

The year 10 pupils investigated the relationship between pi, diameter and circumference of a circle. They concluded that Pi is the ratio of circumference to diameter and is always a constant.
